All foreigners living in Spain need to have their NIE, which is the Foreign Identity Number. This document is essential for people to reside officially in Spain, giving them the right to health and work, among others.
From Atemporal, we leave you the steps to follow to carry out this procedure quickly and safely.
Types of NIE
To apply for the NIE, you will have to present additional documentation depending on the reasons for the application. On the one hand, there is the option of requesting NIE to be able to reside in Spain; it can be because you are a relative of an EU citizen, or you can also request this documentation for professional reasons; in case you have been hired in a Spanish company, or you want to invest in a business.
Suppose you are applying for the NIE because you are a relative of an EU citizen. In that case, you must carry out this procedure in Spain, specifically at the corresponding General Police Office. Furthermore, to apply for the NIE, if a Spanish company has hired you, you must apply for it at the Spanish embassy in your country of residence.
Renewing the NIE, step by step:
As a first tip, please do not leave this procedure to the last minute, since like any application, it will take a few weeks or even months depending on the wait you are facing, and your NIE could expire. However, the critical point is that with the current situation of COVID 19, if your NIE is found, it will be automatically extended since, with the State of Alarm, the offices were closed.
To make this procedure easy, you must follow the following steps:

5.- Passport size photograph:
On the day of the appointment, you will also need to bring a passport-sized photograph included in your new NIE. In Barcelona, there are many stores and places where you can have this photo taken.
6.-Social security number:
You will be asked for it on the day of the appointment, and it is a requirement for professional reasons.
7.- Medical insurance:
If the renewal is for studies, it is essential to prove that you have taken out private medical insurance.
8.- Payment of the corresponding fee:
It is essential to verify the final fee to be paid. Annually the rates are updated through the Ministry of the Interior, and in this case, it corresponds to the number 052.
9.- Proof of financial means:
In the case of studies, the applicant must justify that he/she has the economic means for the requested stay in Barcelona.
10.- Documentation of continuity of studies:
It is essential to present the registration of the University or business school that reflects the extension of the academic period.
11.-Proof of previous studies:
